The Global Water Partnership’s vision is for a water secure world. GWP mission is to support the sustainable development and management of water resources at all levels.
GWP takes its guiding principles from the Dublin and Rio statements (1992), from the Millennium Assembly (2000) which gave rise to the Millennium Development Goals, and from the World Summit on Sustainable Development (2002) Plan of Action, which set a target for the preparation of IWRM and Water Efficiency plans. This was reaffirmed at Rio+20 (2012).
GWP advocates for the implementation of integrated water resources management (IWRM): the coordinated development and management of water, land, and related resources in order to maximise economic and social welfare without compromising the sustainability of vital environmental systems.
Because GWP is a global action network with multiple stakeholders from many sectors, it provides a neutral platform on which to facilitate dialogues, resulting in changes to policies, laws, and institutions.
GWP provides intellectual leadership for an integrated approach to water resources management. GWP created the GWP ToolBox, a public, online, up-to-date, knowledge centre with the tools, references, and case studies needed for implementing IWRM. The GWP ToolBox is used by a number of universities world-wide for postgraduate training in water resources management.
WMO is a GWP Sponsoring Partner, one of the founding organizations of the GWP. In 2001, the APFM was set up as a joint programme between WMO and GWP, with the vision that WMO would provide the technical guidance and tools, while GWP would stimulate the use of the integrated flood management approach through its regional and country network.
The links to APFM and to its tools are included in the GWP ToolBox. Support to capacity building and projects on the ground is provided through GWP funds. Together with WMO, GWP is a Co-Sponsoring Institution of teh APFM, providing seconded staff to the Technical Support Unit, and constinuously seeking opportunities for the implementation of IFM through the HelpDesk and organizing regularly capacity building workshops based on APFM training materials.
