Flood Mapping

Flood Management Tool Series, Technical Document No. 20 ¦ 2013

This Tool provides guidance on undertaking flood mapping exercises for various planning processes on the local and national level, covering issues like changing land uses, climate change, land use regulations, building codes, impacts of urbanization, emergency response, asset management, flood insurance and overall public awareness. Flood Maps are tools used to visualize flood information for decision makers and the general public. These maps form the basis for developing flood risk scenarios based on land use, environmental and climate conditions, and social and economic conditions, in addition to planning and implementing development alternatives. Special uses include maps that depict exposure to floods of various recurrence periods, flood risks, vulnerability and response information (e.g. evacuation routes, safe high grounds, shelter areas). These are of utmost importance in floodplains and coastal areas at risk of storm surges and tsunamis. Different methodologies are presented in the production of flood maps for various purposes to support decision‐making at all levels.
